Times: By the beginning of the 13th century Brussels has grown to become an important trade center. The wool weaving and drapery industry contributed to giving its city a population of merchants and rich citizens. Brussels was also the chosen seat of the dukes of Brabant who granted the city many privileges in the 13th century: city rights and a college of seven echevins. Brussels became the financial center linking the towns of Brabant into one 'nation' by co-operating with Louvain, Tienen, Antwerp and others.
